Is Cable TV Dying? Thoughts from a Cord Cutter in the Telecom Biz.

Is Cable TV dying?  This is a question we get a lot at RealtyCom Partners, but I wouldn’t call 911 just yet.  Its true, linear TV subscription rates have fallen and continue to fall, but we still see significant numbers of apartment residents that subscribe to cable TV.

First some perspective – personally, I am a cord cutter.  I disconnected my cable TV package (they didn’t make it easy by the way) earlier this year.  I made this decision not because of cost, but because of value.  I have limited time for TV, and I found that more and more of my content was streaming, from external sources of content I was subscribing to over and above my cable bill – so this made taking the leap a bit easier.  Before that, I was a cable TV subscriber since way back, being a former cable guy from the late 90’s until 2010.

RealtyCom manages revenue share for over 300,000 units, so we have a rather unique view into the telecom buying habits of apartment residents across the US.  Over the past four years, we have seen average video subscription rates drop 10 percentage points.  When you look deeper, there are many contributing […]

5G Network for MDUs

After years of hype, all four wireless carriers have begun the 5G roll out. The availability of a nationwide 5G network is still a long way out and currently only a handful of metropolitan areas are being tested by the service providers before 5G is fully rolled out. The 5G network will be potentially faster but there are still several unknowns as far as MDUs (multi dwelling units) are concerned.

Some have suggested that once 5G is fully deployed, apartment residents will no longer need a “wired solution” for television, Internet or voice services.  In fact, most of the cellular “experts” agree that a 5G network will be more vulnerable, all things considered, to the same signal penetration issues that affect the 4G LTE service.  This is due to the frequencies allocated for 5G service.  The fastest of these, millimeter-wave, enables the faster speeds promised by 5G.  However, because 5G uses a higher-frequency than 4G LTE, it will be more impacted by construction materials such as concrete and low-emissivity glass. So, for the time being, wired networks into the building (Fiber/Coax and CAT6 to each unit and common area) will continue to be the best solution for video, data and voice […]

RCP Celebrates 13 Years

Each year the RealtyCom team eagerly awaits our annual Anniversary to celebrate our business and hard-working team. Each September we’re able to have everyone across 6 states come together and kick up their heels and have some “play time” together.  Our 2019 event was no exception!

It’s not often our entire RCP team is together in one place, so a big thank you to our remote employees who traveled to our Marin headquarters to join in on the fun.

After a round of mingling with our fabulous folk, and photo booth hilarity, we were entertained with a roaring 20’s Murder Mystery interactive performance. Who knew we had so many great actors at RealtyCom!

We certainly have a lot to celebrate in 2019:

  • Our 70+ loyal clients (management of over 585,000 units)
  • Adding two new RCP team members, reaching 29 employees
  • First company wide training day on the San Francisco Bay
  • Expanding upon our services and creating new partnerships to enhance our Client services
  • Hitting $1M+ collected for Clients in our revenue share recovery program
  • Exceeding 300,000 units under our Revenue Management, collectively producing over $796K each month for our clients
  • Managing 150+ active construction projects
  • New […]
